UNIVERSAL TRIP COIL MONITOR
|
Trip coil monitors (TCM) or Trip Circuit Supervision relays, continuously verify the health of circuit breakers' trip path to ensure that trip will take place when it is required especially during short circuit faults.

UTCM-3 is self-powered, user friendly and accepts a wide range of 48V-125V AC or DC voltage. The inputs 1,2 and 3 are non-polarized, allowing
same wiring for equipment with positive or negative DC trip bus, solving the limitation of using trip coil monitors on equipment with negative DC trip bus.
Terminals 3, 4 and 5 are form C dry contacts of internal relay used for integration to SCADA. Typical wiring drawings are shown in figures 1 and 2 below. |

Note that in figure 1 (recommended wiring), the 52b contact is wired through the trip coil to UTCM which allows for monitoring the health of the trip coil before the breaker is closed (pre-close monitoring). It is important to confirm that a breaker can be tripped before closing it, because of hazards associated with a breaker not tripping when required. In figure 2, the 52b contact is not wired through the trip coil and some users adopt it as a means of keeping the TCM relay energized when the breaker is tripped. Trip coil monitoring will only take place after the breaker is closed (post-close monitoring), if wired as shown in figure 2. Figure 1 wiring allows for trip coil monitoring in pre-close, post-close and latched-trip (contact that caused trip is maintained closed) states. |

A unique feature of UTCM is the user adjustable function modes and indicator light color via settings on DIP switches S1 and S2 (See figure 3). UTCM operates in 4 modes as follows: Mode 1: Continuous monitoring with relay remaining energized when both inputs (1-2, and 1-3) are high. Mode 2: Continuous monitoring with relay de-energized when both inputs (1-2, and 1-3) are high. Mode 3: Status monitoring with relay remaining energized when both inputs (1-2, and 1-3) are high. Mode 4: Status monitoring with relay de-energized when both inputs (1-2, and 1-3) are high. In continuous monitoring, the UTCM indicator stays on in normal condition whether the breaker is open or closed. In status monitoring, the indicator is turned on only when the breaker is closed and turns off when the breaker is open.
